Four-Day Workweeks and Unlimited PTO are Pathing the Way to Productivity
The overall environment of work throughout the last decade has switched from a more industrial standard into a further evolution of technology that has allowed for office jobs, as well as remote work, to become an increasing style in profession.
The five-day workweek that was created during industrial times was more optimal for productivity because it was a time where more hands-on stations required physical presence in the workspace for labor. Now, with cubicles and screens providing the main environment for work, it has been found that the five-day workweek is diminishing productivity as well as quality of life.
The Denver Channel noted that as of May 2019, nearly 560 school districts in 25 states had adopted the four-day week, and Colorado leads the nation in this trend with more than 60% of districts statewide adopting the model.
On a larger and not school-system based account, Breathe HR noted that Microsoft’s Japan offices also trialed it and saw a large 40% increase in overall productivity. This concept is sweeping across the world, with many British businesses also trialing the four-day workweek concept, and it has also shown success in countries like New Zealand and Sweden.
What are some more advantages of a four-day workweek?
- – Reduced Costs: Colorado school systems have saved over $1 Million from their first year alone adopting this incentive. Imagine all the proactive additives in a school system that could come from this large sum of money. Other costs would be reduced, such as office runs, transportation, and cuts in expenses such as coffee and food throughout the day.
- – Fewer Health Issues: With having fewer days in a week, the likelihood of employees coming ill to the office decreases. This has a lot to do with people hoarding their vacation time and only having a few days in the year to take off from work. Relating to employees’ mental health, a four-day workweek allows for more time with loved ones, friends and family, as well as some extra rest time in the week. Both these qualities lead to an improvement in overall well-being and increase the quality of life of employees. Having more lenient office hours allows for employees to also take time for activities, hobbies and self-keeping necessary for much-needed enjoyment and happiness.
- – Recruitment and Retention: With so many millennials being able to utilize their own work schedules and habits, it is important to new-age employees to be able to balance their work and home life. With employment being able to offer a more flexible work period, it is more appealing to the masses and helps with employee retention and engagement.
With the rise in the amount of remote workers in the workforce, these ideals and principals overlapping company ethics have proven very successful. Giving consumers a sense of entitlement and freedom will benefit both sides of the party in the long run. These principles are being pushed out on so many different levels, whether it is through school systems, remote and digital workers, or large office spaces for huge corporations utilizing PTO, proactive results have been found.
Unlimited paid time off (PTO) is a newer policy that is being set into companies. Studies show that even with unlimited PTO, employees are still working the same amount of days. Much of this is due to the fact that all their team and project needs still must be met, requiring them to be in-office working with their department. Project and success-tracking is pivotal for companies to be able to evaluate how well their company is utilizing their PTO policy.
Taking a step back, it is important to remember all the studies and facts that show the importance of employees practicing their own self-maintenance completely separate from the workforce. Employees need to be able to relieve the daily stresses of their employment and come back to work feeling fully energized, engaged and proactive.
